The plastic state

Nature.com - May 12, 2017
Partial epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), whereby tumour cells gain migratory characteristics but at the same time maintain certain epithelial traits, was regarded as important in the promotion of metastasis. However, two studies in 2015 used ...

Cancer metastasis: The unexpected perils of hypoxia

Science Daily - May 12, 2017
Now researchers led by LMU professor Heiko Hermeking have dissected the mechanisms responsible for the association between tumor hypoxia and metastasis. Their results reveal how hypoxia leads to inhibition of the synthesis of a short RNA molecule ...

Prostate Cancer Distant Metastasis Predicted by APV

Renal and Urology News - May 14, 2017
The investigators calculated AP velocity (APV) as the slope of the linear regression line of all alkaline phosphatase (AP) volumes after RP and prior to distant metastasis. APV values in the highest quartile (3.29 U/L/year or higher) were considered rapid.

Mechanobiology of the Endothelium

The endothelium is an excellent example of where biology meets physics and engineering. It must convert mechanical forces into chemical signals to maintain homeostasis. It also controls the immune response, drug delivery through the vasculature, and cancer metastasis. Basic understanding of these processes is starting to emerge and the knowledge gained from research is now being used in applications from drug delivery to imaging modalities. This book reviews current knowledge in mechanobiology of the endothelium and its implications for the development of theranostic devices.

Neck Dissection

by: Alfio Ferlito, MD, K. Thomas Robbins, Carl E. Silver
The neck dissection has evolved over time by defining its applications, tailoring it to the extent and location of regional disease, thereby using this information to expand or reduce the magnitude of the surgery itself. It has been labeled radical, functional, modified and selective depending on the sacrifice or preservation of certain muscles, nerves or vessels. The aim, however, has always been to encompass the lymph nodes at risk of harboring cancer. It has been described as elective (N0) or therapeutic (N+).
